Match every pair, keep a straight face, and whatever you do — don’t hold the last queen.

Old Maid is one of the oldest family card games in the world, known as Schwarzer Peter in Germany and Papaz Kaçtı in Turkey. One queen is removed from the deck, leaving a single unmatchable card — and whoever is stuck holding it at the end loses.

Here you play against cheerful computer opponents, so the whole ritual of drawing, matching and bluffing works perfectly solo.

How to Play Old Maid by Yourself

  1. Remove one queen from the deck, then deal all 51 cards to the players.
  2. Everyone discards the pairs already in their hand (two 7s, two Jacks…).
  3. On your turn, draw one unseen card from the next player’s hand.
  4. If it completes a pair, discard the pair; otherwise it stays in your hand.
  5. Keep drawing around the table until every pair is matched.
  6. The player left holding the lone queen — the Old Maid — loses the round.

Rules of Old Maid

  • Played with 51 cards: a standard deck minus one queen.
  • Pairs are matched by rank; suits and colors don’t matter.
  • Drawn cards must be taken blind — no peeking at the neighbor’s hand.
  • Players with no cards left are safe and sit out the rest of the round.
  • There is no winner, only one loser: the holder of the final queen.

Winning Strategies for Old Maid

  • Track queens the moment they appear — matched queens mean the danger card is live.
  • When holding the odd queen, vary its position in your hand so bots can’t learn a pattern.
  • Count remaining cards: knowing how many unmatched ranks remain tells you your real risk.
  • Drawing from a large hand is statistically safer than from a nearly empty one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Old Maid by myself?

Yes — in this version you play against computer opponents, so the classic multiplayer party game works perfectly as a single-player experience.

Is Old Maid the same as Schwarzer Peter and Papaz Kaçtı?

They are close cousins. Germany’s Schwarzer Peter and Turkey’s Papaz Kaçtı follow the same match-pairs-avoid-the-odd-card idea, differing only in which card is the unlucky one.

Is Old Maid suitable for young children?

Absolutely — it is one of the best first card games for kids: simple matching, no reading required, and rounds finish in a few minutes.

Which card is removed from the deck?

Traditionally one of the four queens, leaving one queen unmatchable. Some families remove a jack or use a special “Old Maid” card instead.
